You see people who are happy all the time. Everything seems perfect in their world. Are you one of them or are you feeling like you're on one side of the window looking in and want to join the party. But you wonder why you aren't as happy as these folks are.
These people have habits that help them have a happier life.
Here's the good news! You can be one of them. It's all in how you look at life - the habits you've developed over the years. Here are the habits that help foster happiness. Adopt them and see the positive results that can you can experience.
Consistent belief that good things will happen will cause them to happen. Not only will you be in a better mood than if you keep expecting the worst to happen. Even believing that everything will be okay is better than expecting something bad to happen.
If you believe in yourself and that you can handle what ever happens will help you to remain optimistic and be happier.
Helping others helps you. For example, you will
- realize that you have so much to be grateful for
- feel good when you help others
- have a purpose
Why not think of three things you can do to help others.
Being grateful for everything in your life right now. When you spend your time thinking about what you don't have you'll just be miserable. It's true that there is always someone better off than you, but there are also people in a worse position than you as well. Why not keep a gratitude journal? Pick up a pretty notebook and each day make a list of what you are grateful for each day. Studies have been done that show the benefits of being grateful. Here's a link to one article about this.
Having something to look forward to
We all have to have something exciting to look forward to in the future. Expectation can make us happy. Set positive long and short-term goals. Here are some examples:
- graduating from university or college
- a nice vacation
- dinner with your significant other on the weekend
- opening night of a new movie you're really looking forward to
- the new season of your favourite television show (for example, I'm looking forward to Season 5 of Nashville in January)
What exciting future are you looking forward to?
Life doesn't always go smoothly, plans don't always work out exactly as you hope. We can't avoid those times in our life. But how we handle them is what counts and contributes to our happiness. If you make an obstacle seem bigger than it really is, you won't be happy.
Acknowledging a setback with composure and calmness and moving forward will help you be happy.
We all feel good when we do things that we are good at. It doesn't have to be something competitive. Work on a hobby you love, like golf, stamp collecting, playing a musical instrument or knitting. Doing any of these things can make you feel so good about yourself.
What are you good at? Everyone is good at something. Make a list of those things and try to spend some time doing them each day.
Have Realistic Expectations
Temper your expectations. Expectations that are extremely optimistic may cause disappointment and keeping them extremely low will stop you from feeling optimistic.
Keeping your expectations at a reasonable level will help you feel happy.
Holding on to anger doesn't help keep you in a happy place. It's been said that not forgiving someone is like drinking poison and waiting for the person you are holding a grudge against to die. It only poisons you. In this case, it just keeps you unhappy.
Forgive, let go and move on. You don't have to forget what was done to you, but you can forgive.
It's exhausting pretending to be something you're not. If you don't feel good and comfortable in your own skin, you won't be happy.
It's easier to be you. It's in your DNA - unless you're an actor just be you.
The past is the past. The first line of the Reiki principles is "Just for Today".
You can't change what happened in the past - it just makes you feel regret. So why worry about it.
Worrying about things that may happen in the future can be a waste of time. The thing that you're worrying about may not even happen, so worrying about it today isn't going to help you be happy today.
Rehashing the past and worrying about the future doesn't help keep you happy now.
So what are you waiting for?
Why not for the next ten days look at yourself and implement one of these habits into your life. Think about the habit and how you are practicing it in your life. Are you on top of that one? Great! If not, work towards changing your mindset around it.
