We are confident in so many things but sometimes self doubt creeps in. This makes us question what are doing and may holds us back from what we want to do.
What is Self-Doubt
Self-doubt is defined as:
"the lack of confidence the reliability of
one's own motives, personality, thought, etc."
Basically when we are not confident in our abilities to do something, we start to doubt ourselves. There are two reasons why we may do this:
- we may be afraid - either of the reaction of others or because we don't know how something may turn out, or
There are ways to overcome either of these causes of self-doubt. But to overcome your self-doubt you need to know which one is causing you to doubt yourself.
The solution for this is very easy. You can ask for help or find a way to learn what you don't know.
There are many books on how to do things, courses at community colleges, you may know an expert in the area you need to learn more about.
The Internet is a great way to learn how to do things. For example, last week I needed to figure out how to properly record the purchase of gift receipts in Quickbooks. I was able to find a video that explained it very clearly and I was able to do the entries I needed and create the sales receipts for my client who had purchased the gift certificates for Reiki sessions.
Another amazing website is www.Udemy.com. They have courses on everything.
Fear is a little bit harder to deal with.
But remember, Fear is really an acronym meaning False Evidence Appearing Real. Most times we are afraid of the unknown and more often than not, what we fear doesn't actually come to pass.
Here are a few techniques to help you overcome fears.
Break it down into bite-sized pieces
When you feel overwhelmed because you have too much to do, break it down into little pieces. You don't eat an apple in one bite. You take little bites of it and soon enough the apple is gone.
Same with the seemingly large amount of stuff to get done.
Do a little, and then a little more and soon enough you'll be finished and wonder why you were afraid in the first place.
Determine what is the worst that can happen
If you are worrying that you'll fail consider what the worst possible outcome will be. Is it something you can manage and get through?
Visualize yourself in that scenario and coming out the other side. There, it's over, you've faced that fear. And chances are that this won't be your outcome in the situation.
Accentuate the Positive
If your lack of self-doubt comes from not being good enough, remember all the good things that you have done, all the great things people have said about you.
You've done great things in the past and you'll be great at this project too!
