Sometimes it's hard to stay positive given what we see in the news these days.
One way to do this is to be of help to others. It makes you feel wonderful and someone else feels good too. And they may feel motivated to help someone else.
I remember an old shampoo commercial where the model said, "I liked it so much I told two friends and they told two friends and so on and so on". And with a few kind acts, you help set in motion small changes that trickle out through your world.
Here are a few ideas on things you can do to help others.
1. Drop some change into a vending machine and walk away
The next person to arrive at the machine will see that the machine has money and is waiting for someone to make a selection. They'll be pleased to get a free treat.
2. Help someone at the grocery store
Help an elderly person take their groceries to their car.
3. Open Doors
It makes people feel good to have the door opened for them. Not everyone does it anymore. I love it when people do this for me.
4. Don't let people eat alone
Do you have a neighbour who lives alone, maybe is widowed? If you've made enough food, why not ask them over to join you. You'll get to know your neighbour better and have new and interesting things to talk about.
5. Send someone a card for no reason
People are used to getting cards and letters on their birthdays and at Christmas. But email has been making sending letters and cards by snail mail obsolete for quite some time. I love sending cards to new people I meet at networking events. Nine times out of 10 they mention it when I see them next and they tell me that aside from bills and advertisements, they rarely get real mail any more.
6. Help your neighbour
Is your neighbour gardening, washing the car or doing other chores? If you have the time, why not ask them if they could use some help.
7. Donate, don't discard
Do you have old equipment, clothing or books that you don't need any longer? Depending on what it is, why not take it to Goodwill, a re-use centre or Habitat for Humanity or give it away using an Ad on Kijiji or Craig's List? Someone who may not be able to afford the stuff will appreciate being able to get it for free or at a low cost.
Sure you could sell it in a yard sale, but really, how much will you earn while you blow off a Saturday dickering with people.
We did this last year when we were getting ready to move. We took loads of stuff to the local re-use centre and posted ads in Kiiji for the stuff the re-use centre wouldn't take. I still remember how excited the little boy from Caledon was when he came with his parents to get the lumber we didn't want to use. He kept loading stuff into the back seat of his father's truck as Dad was tying down the stuff he had filled the back of the truck with.
8. Teach Others
You probably have talents that others don't but would like to learn. Whether it's painting, sewing, woodworking or computer stuff. Share your knowledge.
9. Share Knowledge
Mentor others who may be starting out in a career or business. It's a wonderful way to give back to those who helped you along by helping others.
When you act in a caring way towards others, you both feel joy. So go ahead, think of ways you can help others, then do it and see how wonderful you feel.
